The Philippine Coconut Authority and the University of the Philippines’ National Center for Transportation Studies launched the road test of the 5-percent biofuel blend in public transport vehicles.
The National Fuels Board earlier approved the move to increase the mandated biodiesel blend from the current 2 percent to 5 percent.
The road test will use seven jeepneys belonging to transport groups identified by the PCA and the Department of Energy.
PCA administrator Euclides Forbes said the mandated use of biofuels would strengthen the domestic market for coconut, which would create an additional income of P19.6 billion for farmers, as the 5-percent coco methyl ester biodiesel blend or B5 would mean greater demand for coconut oil.
