Garuda to make use of biofuel by 2015

National flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) is planning to use biofuel for all of its aircraft by 2015.

“But it is only if the plan is aided by a sufficient supply of biofuel,” said Garuda Indonesia’s operational director, Capt.Novianto Herupratomo, in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

The estimated amount of biofuel needed is 10 million liters, which is relatively small as it accounts for only around 1 percent of the total fuel consumption for all aircraft owned by the airline.

“It is estimated that this amount of fuel is sufficient enough to meet the fuel needs of a single aircraft for a year,” said Novianto.

He said that currently, Garuda Indonesia operated 96 aircraft which would expand to 144 units by 2015.
