66% of biofuels supplied in the UK are sustainable

According to the Department of Transport, between 15 April 2012 and 14 January 2013, 965 million litres of renewable fuel were supplied, of which 66 per cent have so proven to be sustainable. 18 per cent of sustainable renewable fuel used in the UK was sourced from UK feedstocks.

Excluding emissions from indirect landuse, the use of biofuels issued with Renewable Transport Fuel Certificates (RTFCs) achieved an average greenhouse gas saving of 68 per cent.

55 per cent of the sustainable biofuel supplied was bioethanol, 39 per cent was biodiesel (FAME), with biomethanol and methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) making up the remaining six per cent.

22 per cent of the biodiesel used in this country was made from cooking oil, while 49 per cent of bioethanol was made from corn from the USA.
