Hawaiian Electric has agreed to buy biofuel derived from algae from an Ohio-based company that plans to build an algae farm on Oahu.

The agreement calls for Phycal Inc. to deliver between 100,000 to 150,000 gallons of the fuel for testing at the utility's Kahe Generating Station by April 2014.

Phycal plans to break ground later this year or early next year on a pilot farm near Poamoho Camp in Wahiawa.

Hawaiian Electric said Thursday Phycal will use carbon dioxide provided from Oahu industrial producers, harvest algae, extract oil from the algae, and convert the product to biofuel.
