The Iowa Power Fund Board on Wednesday approved a $1.5 million award to Growth Design Energy to build a biodiesel refinery near Forest City.
Growth Design Energy will use second-generation refining technologies with nonfood waste oils to produce 3 million gallons of biodiesel annually.
Grant funds of $699,500 will assist the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service to expand existing Green Corps and AmeriCorps programs. They will support the training of Iowa veterans to implement statewide energy efficiency improvements for low income, elderly and veterans' homes, using energy audits, weatherization and energy efficiency education and outreach.
Growth Design Energy and the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service will leverage more than $12.3 million in matching funds to bring the cost of the two projects to more than $14.5 million.
