Hawaiian Electric solicita propostas de fornecimento de biodiesel

Hawaii's largest electric utility is requesting bids from suppliers for three to seven million gallons of biodiesel per year.

Hawaiian Electric Co. wants the fuel to run a 110-megawatt generating station at Oahu's Campbell Industrial Park and an eight-megawatt emergency power facility at Honolulu International Airport.

The company said in a statement Tuesday it prefers locally produced biodiesel. But it says bidders may offer biodiesel made outside Hawaii, or a combined supply of local and non-Hawaii biodiesel, if an island source isn't immediately available.

Hawaiian Electric, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc., is pushing to create alternative sources of energy to comply with a 2009 state law requiring the state's electric utilities to get 40 percent of their power from renewable resources by 2030. It's also developing wind, solar, and geothermal energy.
