Various crop commodities have seen prices on the rise in recent weeks and sunflower is no exception.

“2011 new crop confection sunflower prices are out at $30 per hundredweight,” said Larry Kleingartner, executive director of the National Sunflower Association. “The contract is offering an Act of God clause along with several price-related premiums.

“The crush plants are offering new crop 2011 oil sunflower prices at $22.45 per hundredweight for cash delivery and $21.95-$22.60 for an Act of God clause,” he added.

One of the positives in the oil market was the passing of the tax credit extension by Congress this month which extends the biodiesel tax credit through Dec. 31, 2011.

“The extension of the biodiesel tax credit is very positive for oil values,” said Kleingartner. “The biodiesel tax credit had been expired in December 2009 resulting in a decrease of over 35 percent in biodiesel production in 2010 from the previous year.

“This is good news for all vegetable oils as it should lead to considerable oil and fat usage for biodiesel production in 2011,” he continued. “Vegetable oil usage is expected to increase, making stocks tighter in 2011.”

Competition for acres next year is another factor shaping up as a positive for growers.
