In Connecticut, Constitution Biofuels’ grand opening is scheduled for Saturday. The plant produced its first 250 gallon batch of biodiesel last week, but the fuel needs to pass a battery of tests before it can start commercial sales.
The owner and sole employee, Doug Dickey acquired a $270,000 loan from the Southeastern Connecticut Enterprise Region and has spent $300,000 on equipment and installation of the plant in Groton. Dickey notes that even though the $1/gal biodiesel subsidy has ended, he will be able to survive because he was able to purchase equipment for pennies on the dollar, constructed his facility with the help of his father and because he collects the oil feedstock himself. He currently collects approximately 3500 gallons a month from two hospitals, a college and dozens of restaurants instead of using a collection service. He notes that he will need to collect 7000 gallons to achieve breakeven. About his experiences so far, Dickey states, “It’s been a little challenge, but we’re all very excited to get to this point.”
