In South Carolina, the Columbia City Council announced a new program to collect used cooking oil and have Midlands Biofuels convert it to biodiesel. The B-20 fuel blend will then be sold back to the city for use in its vehicle fleet.

The program was developed as a means of preventing grease being poured into the city’s sewer system. Columbia is spending $1.5 million a year to clean pipes or contain major sewer spills.

Ashley Dove, wastewater compliance coordinator, explains : “Eighty to ninety percent of sanitary sewer overflows are related to grease.” He also notes that residences are responsible for 92% of those overflows. The city accepts used cooking oil every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. The oil must be free of food scraps, soap suds and water.
